How to enable File Explorer compact mode on Windows 10

On Windows 10, File Explorer is getting a new default layout that adds extra patting between the visual elements to make the experience easier to use on touch-enabled devices.

The new layout is available starting with build 21337, but Windows 10 is also adding an option to switch to the classic mode on the “Folders Options” page if you prefer the traditional design.

In this guide, you will learn the steps to switch back to the classic layout of File Explorer on Windows 10 build 21337 and higher.

Enable File Explorer compact mode on Windows 10

To use the compact layout on File Explorer, use these steps:

1. Open File Explorer on Windows 10.

2. Click the View tab.

3. Click the Options button.

4. Click the View tab in Folder Options.

Once you complete the steps, File Explorer will switch to the classic layout.

If you do not see the option, you are not using the version that supports this feature. The new layout and the “Use compact mode” option are available starting with build 21337 and higher releases.
